The Vacation Hack You Never Knew You Needed: Why You Should Always Leave a Glass and Paper in Your Sink Before Traveling

Before heading out on vacation, most people remember the basics: locking the doors, setting the alarm, and unplugging electronics. But there’s one little-known trick that can save you from unpleasant surprises when you return—placing an upside-down glass and a piece of paper in your sink.

Why This Hack Works

1. Prevents Dry Drain Traps & Sewer Gas
The P-trap under your sink holds water to block sewer gases from entering your home. When you’re away for a long time, that water can evaporate, breaking the seal and allowing bad odors—or even pests—to creep in.

  • The solution: Fill a glass with water and flip it upside down in the sink. It slowly releases water, keeping the trap sealed.

  • For longer trips: Add a teaspoon of mineral oil to the drain to slow evaporation.

2. Works as a Leak Detector
Placing a sheet of paper (tissue, paper towel, or napkin) beneath the glass acts as a simple warning system. If a pipe leaks while you’re gone, the paper will show stains or dampness—alerting you to a potential problem.

3. Helps Deter Pests
Dry drains are like open doors for insects, rodents, or even snakes. Keeping your P-trap moist makes it much harder for unwanted guests to crawl inside.
