This cozy and filling Amish-style bake is like something straight from a farmhouse kitchen. Juicy hamburger patties rest on a bed of sliced potatoes and onions, all covered in a rich mushroom gravy and finished with melted cheddar cheese. It’s a hearty one-pan meal perfect for feeding the family.
Ingredients:
Ingredient Quantity
Ground beef 1 pound
Garlic powder 1 teaspoon
Onion powder 1 teaspoon
Salt 1 teaspoon
Black pepper ½ teaspoon
Dried thyme ½ teaspoon
Olive oil 2 tablespoons
Sliced mushrooms 1 cup
All-purpose flour 2 tablespoons
Milk 1 ½ cups
Medium potatoes, sliced thin 4
Large onion, sliced thin 1
Shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare and Sear the Patties
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and thyme. Shape the seasoned beef into 4 patties. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, then sear the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Set them aside once done.
Step 2: Cook the Mushroom Gravy
Using the same skillet, add in the sliced mushrooms and sauté until tender. Sprinkle in the flour and stir to coat the mushrooms evenly. Slowly pour in the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy.
Step 3: Assemble the Casserole
In a greased baking dish, layer the thinly sliced potatoes and onions evenly. Arrange the browned patties over the top. Pour the prepared mushroom gravy over everything, making sure it spreads throughout the dish.
Step 4: Bake and Finish
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle the cheddar cheese on top, and return it to the oven for another 10–15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling.
