What Does a Purple Fence Post Mean?

At first glance, it might seem like a quirky or artistic choice. But in 16 states across the United States, this specific color holds legal weight. A purple-painted post is recognized as the equivalent of a “No Trespassing” sign, thanks to what’s known as Purple Paint Laws.
Why Use Purple Paint?
Purple was selected because it stands out vividly in natural settings. It doesn’t blend in with trees, bushes, or the ground, making it a clear visual marker. The shade is often even referred to as “No Hunting Purple.”
This color serves two purposes:
Warning hikers and wanderers to stay off private land.
Alerting hunters that hunting on this property is not allowed.
