Introduction: Good vision is something many of us take for granted—until it starts to fade. Cataracts, a common age-related condition, cloud the lens of the eye and impair vision. While modern medicine offers surgical solutions, nature might hold a gentle, preventative ally in the form of a powerful herb: Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis). Known as the “miracle herb for vision,” eyebright has been traditionally used for centuries to maintain eye health, reduce inflammation, and potentially slow the progression of cataracts. This article walks you through a simple herbal remedy using eyebright to support your eye health naturally.
Ingredients:
1 teaspoon dried eyebright herb (Euphrasia officinalis)
1 cup of distilled or filtered water
Optional: 1 teaspoon dried calendula flowers (for extra anti-inflammatory benefits)
Optional: 1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds (traditionally used for improving vision)
1 glass jar with lid or tea infuser
Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer (if not using an infuser)
Instructions:
Boil the distilled water and let it cool slightly (to about 90°C/195°F).
Place the dried eyebright (and any optional herbs, if using) in a tea infuser or loose in a jar.
Pour the hot water over the herbs and cover.
Steep for 10–15 minutes to allow the herbal compounds to infuse fully.
Strain the mixture through cheesecloth or a fine strainer to remove all plant particles.
Let the tea cool to room temperature before using it.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Drink 1/2 cup of the tea once or twice daily for general eye health support.
For external use: soak a sterile cotton pad in the cooled tea and apply as a compress over closed eyes for 5–10 minutes.
Store any unused tea in a sealed glass container in the refrigerator. Use within 48 hours.
