2. Preparing the Planting Medium
For optimal rooting, you’ll need a special growing medium. Start with pure black soil or potting soil, but avoid adding any fertilizer at this stage. Fertilizers can be too strong and may harm the new roots. Then, add a small amount of construction sand — the type used for mixing cement. This sand helps with drainage and prevents the soil from becoming too compact. Sand works similarly to vermiculite, promoting better moisture retention and root development. Mix the soil and sand together until it’s well integrated.
