Oven Braised Beer Brats with Caramelized Onions

Step 1: Preheat Oven

Set oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2: Caramelize Onions

In a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown, about 20–25 minutes.

Step 3: Add Garlic

Stir in minced garlic and cook for 2–3 minutes until fragrant.

Step 4: Add Brats and Liquids

Nestle bratwursts among the onions. Pour in beer and beef broth, ensuring brats are mostly covered. Stir in Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.

Step 5: Braise in Oven

Bring mixture to a simmer on the stovetop, then transfer skillet to oven. Bake uncovered for 30–40 minutes, or until brats are cooked through and infused with flavor.

Step 6: Serve

Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve hot.

Variations & Tips

  • Add sliced bell peppers with the onions for extra color.

  • Use a hoppier beer like IPA or a pinch of red pepper flakes for more spice.

  • For a touch of sweetness, stir in a spoonful of brown sugar during onion caramelization.

  • Leftovers can be sliced into sandwiches or served over pasta.
