Southern Sausage Biscuits: A Classic Comfort Food Recipe
Few things in life are as comforting as a warm, flaky biscuit filled with savory sausage. Southern Sausage Biscuits are a staple of Southern kitchens, perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even a cozy snack. With their golden, buttery layers and flavorful sausage filling, they’re guaranteed to satisfy.
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
3/4 cup milk (whole or 2%)
1/2 pound breakfast sausage (pork or your choice)
Optional: a pinch of black pepper or paprika for extra flavor
Instructions
Cook the Sausage
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until fully browned. Break it into small crumbles as it cooks. Once done, set aside and let it cool slightly.
Prepare the Biscuit Dough
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually stir in the milk until the dough just comes together—don’t overmix to keep biscuits light and fluffy.
Shape the Biscuits
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll it to about 1/2-inch thickness.
Cut out biscuits using a round cutter or the rim of a glass.
Flatten each biscuit slightly and place a spoonful of cooked sausage in the center. Fold the dough over to seal or layer as desired.
Bake
Place biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
