Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment.
- Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy.
- Add molasses and blend well.
- Beat in egg until smooth.
- In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt, and spices.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients; mix until dough forms.
- Shape dough into 1-inch balls.
- Roll each ball in sugar, then gently flatten with the bottom of a juice glass dipped in sugar.
- Space cookies 2 inches apart on the sheet.
- Bake 8–10 minutes, just until edges set. Cool briefly on sheet, then transfer to wire racks or paper towels.
