virginia’s molasses cookies- recipe 100 years old

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment.
  2. Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy.
  3. Add molasses and blend well.
  4. Beat in egg until smooth.
  5. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt, and spices.
  6. Combine wet and dry ingredients; mix until dough forms.
  7. Shape dough into 1-inch balls.
  8. Roll each ball in sugar, then gently flatten with the bottom of a juice glass dipped in sugar.
  9. Space cookies 2 inches apart on the sheet.
  10. Bake 8–10 minutes, just until edges set. Cool briefly on sheet, then transfer to wire racks or paper towels.
