Cheesesteak-Style Egg Rolls: Crispy, Cheesy, Irresistible Comfort

🍳 Preparation

1. Prepare the Filling

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions (and bell peppers, if using) and sauté for 3–4 minutes, until softened and slightly caramelized.

Add the sliced beef to the pan and season with salt and black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and just cooked through—about 4–5 minutes.

Remove the pan from heat and stir in the shredded cheese (and Cheez Whiz, if using). Mix until everything is melted and evenly combined.

Allow the filling to cool slightly before assembling the egg rolls—this makes wrapping easier and prevents the wrappers from tearing.

2. Assemble the Egg Rolls

Lay an egg roll wrapper on a clean surface in a diamond shape, with one corner pointing toward you.

Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the cheesesteak filling into the center of the wrapper. Be careful not to overfill—too much filling will cause the roll to burst during frying.

Fold the bottom corner up over the filling, then fold in both sides tightly. Brush the top corner lightly with beaten egg, then roll it up firmly to seal. Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling.

Tip: Keep a damp paper towel over unrolled wrappers to prevent them from drying out while you work.

3. Fry the Egg Rolls

In a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

Working in batches, carefully add the egg rolls to the hot oil, being sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crisp.

Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked egg rolls to a paper towel–lined plate to drain excess oil.

4. Make the Dipping Sauce

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and hot sauce (if using). Whisk until smooth.

This creamy, tangy sauce complements the rich cheesesteak flavors perfectly, adding just the right balance of zest and sweetness.

🧀 Serving & Presentation

Arrange the hot, crispy egg rolls on a platter with a small bowl of dipping sauce in the center. For extra flair, sprinkle a little chopped parsley or grated Parmesan over the top.

When you bite in, expect a satisfying crunch followed by the molten, cheesy beef filling—a mouthwatering combination that’s both hearty and addictive. Serve them fresh from the fryer for the best texture.

These Cheesesteak-Style Egg Rolls pair beautifully with:

  • A crisp, cold beer or soda

  • Fries or onion rings for a complete comfort meal

  • A light green salad for balance (if you’re feeling virtuous)
